Just got home from hospital for abdominal pains; didnt have diarrhea until i got home; is this due to the IV?

Im sorry i forgot to add that they added antibiotics; and i read that antibiotics can cause diarrhea; so should i not be concerned unless it doesnt go away?

it’s possible that the IV helped hydrate you, allowing you to poop. it really depends on the IV they gave you. they may have ascertained that you were stopped up and needed to move your bowels, so they gave you something to help you go. google the medicines they gave you and their possible effects/side effects

No, IV fluids do not cause diarrhea….the simplest of IV fluids are saline solutions, the same that flows in your blood, it is used to rehydrate you and or used to inject IV medications which are an easier route to give you medications so you do not have to take orally (by mouth) which you might throw up. The next step up, and commonly given is a mixture of dextrose (sugar) and saline (salt) solution. The small amounts of glucose help to give you a small amount of nutrition by IV route that may help you to feel better if you have not eaten or throwing up. Now since I don’t know what ultimately was found, if anything at all…if the problem with flu like symptoms, the diarrhea may just be a ongoing symptom of it….and will work it’s way through. It may become problematic if you are having a lot of it…fluids in frequent small amounts if you can tolerate it is the way to go…weak sweet teas ,broth, Popsicles, small amounts of gatorade…liquids like this..no juices..they exacerbate diarrhea and upset the stomach….if you feel hungrier..and bananas, plain toast, crackers, soup, rice, plain simple cereals…stuff that is more bland than has spice or lots of sugar.
But if it gets so out of hand, and you are weak and light-headed, give your doc a call, they may prescribe a prescription to help with the diarrhea or suggest a over the counter (OTC) for you to take…or have you seen to assess you, your problem and possible readmit to a ER or hospitalization. Remember, so flu’s, or virus’s have to run their course..some may be a 24 hour bug or may a few days to completely get over. Good luck.
